King Charles I (1600-1649), English Civil War monarch executed in 1649. Engraving, published in 1745, by George Vertue (1684-1756), after a portrait by the Flemish painter, Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641).

Antique engraving, published in 1745, of the English Stuart monarch, King Charles I (1600-1649), by the English antiquarian and engraver, George Vertue (1684-1756), after the Flemish painter, Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). King Charles I ascended the throne in 1625 and in 1629, following bitter constitutional disputes, dismissed Parliament and began 11 years of personal rule. Deprived of parliamentary sources of revenue, he revived ship money, a tax first levied in medieval times on coastal cities and counties, as a general tax. This action aroused widespread opposition and added to the discontent leading to the English Civil War, also known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (England, Scotland, Ireland) and the Great Rebellion. Following his defeat and capture by Parliamentarians, King Charles I was executed in 1649. George Vertue is known primarily for his portraits. Though not acclaimed as a great artist, he left a body of work that has great historical value, including illustrations for the folio edition of Paul de Rapin's History of England (1736), the Vetusta Monumenta (1717-1756) of the Society of Antiquarians, and the Oxford Almanac (1723-1751). He is buried in Westminster Abbey, London. Sir Anthony Van Dyck was born in Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium) and died in London. He was a prolific painter of portraits of European aristocracy. In England, King Charles I appointed him 'principalle Paynter in ordinary of their Majesties' and knighted him. He is buried in St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London.
