. The real Latin quarter . CHAPTER V A DEJEUNER AT LAVENUES ^* If you should chance to breakfast at Lavenues, or, as it is called, the Hotelde France et Bretagne, for years famousas a rendezvous of men celebrated in artand letters, you will be impressed first withthe simplicity of the three little rooms form-ing the popular side of this restaurant, andsecondly with the distinguished appearanceof its clientele. As you enter the front room, you passgood Mademoiselle Fanny at the desk, acheery, white-capped, genial old lady, whohas sat behind that desk for forty years, and has seen many a bon garcon struggleup the ladder of fame—from the days whenhe was a student at the Beaux-Arts, untilhis name became known the world has long been a favorite restaurant withmen like Rodin, the sculptor—and Colin, the painter—and the late Falguiere—and 93. MADEMOISELLE FANNY AND HER STAFF Jean Paul Laurens and Bonnat, and dozensof others equally celebrated—and withour own men, like Whistler and Sargentand Harrison, and St. Gaudens and Mac-monnies. These three plain little rooms are totallydifferent from the other side, as it iscalled, of the Maison Lavenue. Here onefinds quite a gorgeous cafe, with a prettygarden in the rear, and another room—opening into the garden—done in delicategreen lattice and mirrors. This side is farmore expensive to dine in than the side withthe three plain little rooms, and the gentle-men with little red ribbons in their button-holes ; but as the same good cook dispensesfrom the single big kitchen, which servesfor the dear and the cheap side the samegood things to eat at just half the price, thereason for the popularity of the cheapside among the crowd who come heredaily is evident. It is a quiet, restful place, this Maison Lavenue, and the best place I know in which to dine or breakfast from day to day.
