He died Nov. 6, , Thomas K., thirteenth president of Will-iam and Mary college, was born in King and Queencounty, on Dec. 5, 1803, the son of Thomas R. Dewand Lucy Gatewood, his wife. His father was alarge land and slave holder in King and Queencounty, Va., who liad served a short time in the warof the revolution, and as a captain in the war of R. Dew, the son, was graduated from Will-iam and Mary college in 1820, after which he traveledtwo years in Europe. On Oct. 10, 1836, he waselected professor of history and political law iu Will-iam and Mary college. The chair of history, whichwas established for the first time under Rev. RobertKeith, in 1830, was developed by Mr. Dew intoone of first importance. At that time history andpolitical science were scarcely kuown among thestudies of American colleges.
