LOWELL. 423 incorporated in 1792 for the purpose of cutting a canal for boatsaround the then unimproved Pawtucket Palls, have possession of theprincipal water-privileges of the city. This company constructed acanal on the right bank of the river, sixty feet wide, and extendingfrom above the falls about a mile and a half to the mouth of theConcord River; and this, with the lateral canals, supplies the variousestablishments erected between them and the Merrimack LADD AND WHITNEY MONUMENT, LOWELL. The maximum force is about 15,000 horse-power; but only 10,000 isleased, — allowing a safe margin of variation at all periods and sea-sons. By the limpid flow of this noble stream, under the guidanceof well-trained brain and hand, this place has, within the memory ofliving men, arisen from half a dozen farm-houses to a city of nearly70,000 people. It has at present 7 establishments (many with sev-eral buildings each) making cotton cloths, 10 making prints, 4 making 424 GAZETTEEB OF MASSACHUSETTS. hosiery, 8 making woollen goods, 3 making carpetings, 1 makingrubber goods, and a large number making boilers, machinery, imple-ments and tools.
