Part of Helsinki Suomenlinna is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands popular with tourists and locals Sweden began building the fortress in 1748 as a precaution against Russian expansionism when Finland was still a part of the Swedish kingdom During the war against Sweden Russia occupied Finland Toward the end of the war the Russians easily took Helsinki bombarded the fortress During the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856 an Anglo French fleet bombarded Suomenlinna further causing extensive damage It was restored and enhanced and became an important Russian fortification to protect St Petersburg It came under civilian control in 1973 and now is home to residents and the Finnish Naval Academy Ferries bring supplies and visitors throughout the year
