Eleventh annual report of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories : embracing Idaho and Wyoming : being a report of progress of the exploration for the year 1877 . TT. Near the hills, however, we notice a slight inclina-tion to the southward. It is not more than 2° or 3°, and unless a large areais in view cannot be seen. From there the Laramie beds continue in awesterly direction until hidden by Tertiary beds. From the stratigraph-ical structure of the entire region we see that this group forms a basin, and, so far as we could determine, the younger strata are conformablethereto. This is the one that, in its surface appearance, has been desig-nated as the Shoshone Basin. As we cross the strike of the Laramiebeds, we notice that their dip decreases, amounting finally to onlyabout 2°. Loose drift covers the bluffs and valleys very extensively, somewhat interfering with the recognition of continuations of the facts which we obtained with reference to the Laramie Groupof this region we may regard it
