Evening Light in Warfleet Creek. House Lights and Watery Reflections From a Riverside Cottage, Dartmouth

Late evening image taken at Warfleet Creek near the mouth of the River Dart. The creek gets its name from the Saxon ‘Welflut’ which is a reference to the stream that runs into the creek. During the English Civil War, Royalist troops came down Warfleet Valley to attack Dartmouth in 1643, but in 1646 they were defeated by Nicholas Roope and his men. At one time the quay here was a bustling hive of activity with it’s own international trading vessels, with rope making, four mills, a bakehouse and a brewhouse. A lime kiln still stands here today. A famous pottery was in production here from World War 2 producing it’s famous gurgling fish jugs at the site of an old brewery. Today it is visited by tourists and locals enjoying the safe water in the creek to swim, kayak and paddle board. It is currently being monitored for pollution.
