Three-quarter front view of a 1924 Rolls Royce 40/50hp Silver Ghost Boat Tail, on display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show

n 1963, Mr. Barrie Heath, chairman and managing director of Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd., visited the Motor Show. Following his visit, he suggested that a project for Triplex apprentices to rebuild a vehicle would give them an insight into car construction, and at the same time provide a useful end product and perhaps some marginal publicity. So began the search for a donor - which ended a year later when Mr. Roy Broderick, (Midland Area commercial sales manager) found XR 6727 in a cement works in Aughton, Lancashire. XR 6727 was originally bought by Mrs. Lucy Trench of south London. Mrs. Trench took delivery in March 1924. In total, 6,173 Silver Ghosts were built between 1907 and 1925. When Roy found her she was in a sorry state - she had been rebodied as a hearse and he reported at the time "there's little wrong mechanically, but the body is, in the main, fit only for burning." Beetles fell out of the bodywork as he tapped it to test its strength, and a "few hens were disturbed from their adopted coop and squawked away."
