The designer of the shaft wasMaximilian Godefroy, and the cor-ner-stone was laid on September12, 181,5, in the presence of a largeconcourse of people. A Federalsalute was fired by a detachmentof artillery. The books containingthe names of the subscribers to thebuilding of the monument, thenewspapers of the preceding day,gold, silver and copper coin of theUnited States were deposited inthe corner-stone, together with a MONUMENTS OF THE MONUMENTAL copper plate engraved with a suitableinscription. At first little difficulty was experiencedin raising money for the project, the sur-vivors of North Point especially contribut-ing most generously. The subscriptionsoon reached the sum of .? 10,000, and theerection of the monument began. Thework, however, proceeded slowly, and itbecame necessary to apply to the CityCouncil for aid. On March 18, 1819, thecouncil passed a resolution that a certifi-cate of 6 per cent stock for ?.S,000 beissued to and in favor of the chairman ofthe Battle Monument, to be appliedin aid of the funds for completingthe said monument. On September 12, 1822, thefemale figure executed in marbleby Antonio Capeleno was placedupon the monument. The CityCouncil March 5, 182,5, made an-other appropriation of .1?t,000, andthe committee reported in Decem-ber, 1825, that the monument hadbeen completed.
