I, Browne Willis, laid down 20/. and got what I couldof the Town Money, and had it laid out in a purchase, which cost above SO/. On niv giving my money, the Townsmenagreed to appropriate 40s. per ann. of it, towards putting out a poor child apprentice in three years, and it was some timesdone, but they dont regard it of late, and the design is dropped, COTTESLOW SNELSHALL PRIORY. Ralph Martel founded a Priory at Snelshall, of Black Monks, to the Honour of St. Leonard,about 1218, temp. Hen. HI. This small Priory was, at the Dissolution, endowed with no morethan 18/. Is. Ud. by Dugdales account, and by Speeds, 2il. It is situated in the parish of Whad-don, little more than a quarter of a mile from the Church. In 1227, King Hen. HI. granted a Confirmation to the Convent of Lavenden de dono Sibillae deAungerville, Locum de Snelshall et Capellam de Tattenhoe cum pert. In 1229, the King granted to the Monks of Snelshall, ex dono Radulfi Martel, Locum de Snelshall,Husboot and Heyboot, in Tattenhoe Wood, and what was necessary to build their house, and Fire-bote ; and also granted the Chapel of Tattenhoe, and a tenement in Wylie, given by Geoffrey Gibwen ;and Wallmead Meadow, given to the Monks by John de Calverton, which he held in fee of ThomasHansels Manor; and twenty-four acres in Shenley
