TRIOKS 9 The Floating Corfcs^ The requirements for this trick are seven wine corks (nottapering but of cylindrical form) and a basin of water. Theobject is to make the seven corks float ^opright in the waterwithout weighting them in any way. If the corks be taken singlythe trick is impossible; but ifthey be gathered into a bundle, and in that position grasped. with both hands, held under water for a moment, so as to get well wetted, and thenbrought slowly back to the surface, the bundle will float up-right, as shown in illustration, the several corks which com-pose it being held together by a sort of capillary attraction. Restoring the Cut Thread. Get a couple of pieces of thread about the same one piece up arid put it between the thumb and firstfinger low down so that it does not show; this should be donewhile out of the room. Walk in with the other piece in yourhand, and ask somebody to cut it into eight pieces. Whenthey have done this, burn the ends to show that it is inpieces. Then roll it up again, and start talking to the peo-ple so as to take their attention away from what you aredoing. Drop the cut piece, and bring out the piece that wassecreted between your thumb and finger. Pull it out fulllength, and they will be astonished
