Satellite image of the United States of America, a mosaic of fifteen images made by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) equipment. The AVHRR detector has equipped all NOAA satellites and operates in five channels covering 580nm to 1250nm wavelengths. NOAA satellites follow polar orbits and provide information for weather forecasting, snow and ice monitoring and sea surface temperature measurement. The images which make up this mosaic were made between 24th May 1984 and 14th May 1986. Retouched to remove mapping grid.
