LESLIE LELAND BAKER €T ESLIE LELAND BAKER was born August 4,^ 1875. three miles northeast of Waynesville, Illi- ^^ nois, on a farm where his grandfather settled in 1836. W^^ His father soon afterwards purchased a farm twoI^^A miles east of town, and there Leslie grew to young^^B manhood.^^H At seven years of age he began his education by ^^B attending his home district school; at the age of 15^^B he entered the Waynesville Academy, and there^V completed a three years course of study with credit^w to himself and the institution. When 19 years of ^ age he entered the Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington, Illinois, and four years later graduatedwith the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In this schoolhe graduated with more credits than any other grad-uate of the institution. One year after graduation he spent as a teacher inthe city schools of Hoopeston, Illinois, and the next four years he spent onthe farm.
