The distance to the summit from where thefirst view is obtained is about a mile ; but, owing to the frequent stopsto clear the path, an hour was taken in the ascent. The path wasoriginally cut out by Jerry Ellis, a Rangeley guide, who for severalyears had charge of Allerton Lodge, and who also cut out four placeson different parts of the mountain from which the surrounding countrycould be ALLERTON LODGE, BUGLE COVE. 222 THROUGH THE WILDS. Through the first of these vistas could be seen the lower end ofLake Mooselucmeguntic, including the long sweep of Bema Bay, withStudent and Toothaker Islands, — spots of emerald amid the waterywaste. Beyond the southern shore of the lake, across the narrowborder of forest, a portion of the Richardson Lakes shimmered in thesunlio-ht; beyond, another strip of green, and then like a silver
