A group of relatives and family friends of women and children who have been separated from their fathers and husbands arrive in Lviv city in western Ukraine on April 7, 2022, after traveling on an evacuation train from the southern port city of Odesa, Ukraine. The group comes from the city of Mykolaiv, which has been bombed heavily in the last weeks. One of their neighbours was killed just a few days back when he saved his entire family but was hit by shrapnel from an exploding missile strike. Alona says that this was the final decision that made them decide to leave together. “We are four families in this group and many children. We had to make this decision because it was becoming too dangerous to stay,” she explains. “Our husbands stayed behind and have joined the army to fight. Our children are nervous; they shake and are scared because of what they have seen and heard. Children should never see such things. They should never be in a war”. The group is fleeing to Poland and planning to settle with relatives in Lodz. “We will settle down and wait for the opportunity to be able to come back to Ukraine,” explains Victoria. ©UNICEF/Modola
