IXTkoDLCTION. Vll The figures are drawn from nature and are colored by hand, be-ing earnest endeavors at truth, though the artist must confess that incomparing the subtle tinctures and deft painting of nature with his ownattempts, he is full of discouragements and misgivings as to their suc-cess. He can only say, finally, that he has in the present part, as hewill endeavor to do in the future of the work, (if carried to completion),tried earnestly to meet the wants already set forth, and exerted his bestendeavor in the double capacity of artist and author to render his ex-periment at least a partial success.
