In Jan-uary of that year three warships were sent to Caledonia Bayin the Gulf of Darien, for the purpose of exploring and sur-veying the country. A party of twenty-seven men, led byLieutenant Strain, was landed. The start was made fromCaledonia Bay, on the 20th of January, with the intention ofcrossing the Isthmus to the Gulf of San Mi^guel on the Pa-cific coast.
