The "backside" of the rock of Monemvasia. You can see why they call it the "Greek Gibraltar". Lakonia, Greece
This is a photo of the rock of Monemvasia, taken from New Monemvasia or Gefyra. On the back of this rock you can and should visit the best preserved byzantine town-in-a-castle in Greece, the most romantic place all over Greece, in my humble opinion. The name Monemvasia cames from the Greek words "moni emvasi", that mean one, sole entrance and indeed there is only one way in and out to the outstanding medieval town, and that's a stone bridge, small part of which you can see on the right part of the picture. Just to show the historical significance of the rock I've just made a short list with all of its conquerers. It was inhabited for the first time during the 6th century , when people from many regions of Lakonia, came here to avoid raids of barbaric tribes that had spread all around Peloponnisos. At first they stayed on the top of the hill, on the Upper Town. The Lower Town was inhabited for the first time in the 9th century. 6th century-1246: 1st Byzantine period 1246-1263: Conquered by the Francs 1263-1460: 2nd Byzantine period 1460-1463: Under supervision of the Vatican 1463-1540: 1st Venetian period 1540-1564: 1st Ottoman period 1564-1715: 2nd Venetian period 1715-1821: 2nd Ottoman period 23 July 1821- :Greece. It was one of the first places to be freed, a couple of months after the start of the Greek liberation strugle.
