Jean Jaures (1859-1914). 1898 illustration of the French politician and Socialist leader Auguste Marie Joseph Jean Leon Jaures. Having been an Opportunist Republican, Jaures evolved into one of the first social democrats and in 1902 he became leader of the French Socialist Party. Jaures was assassinated at the outbreak of World War I, and remains one of the main historical figures of the French Left.
