The Vatican, Rome, Italy - October 2014; The Vatican in Rome, Italy, is the spiritual and temporal heart of the Roman Catholic Church. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and one of the largest churches in the world. The Papal Swiss Guard - soldiers of which are shown here - protects the Pope and the Apostolic Palace, serving as the military of Vatican City and bodyguard for the Pope. Established in 1506 under Pope Julius II, their distinctive dress uniform is of blue, red, orange and yellow with a Renaissance style and appearance.
