Young Tajik girl picking cotton along Tajikistan highway A385 100km southeast of Dushanbe

Young Tajik girl pick cotton along Highway A385 about 100km southeast of the Tajikistan capitol of Dushanbe. Tajikistan was the poorest Soviet Republic and declined further with independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Cotton fiber is Tajikistan’s number one agricultural export and until 2008 the government required farmers to devote up to 90 percent of their land to growing cotton. A large percentage of Tajik men have left their country seeking work, leaving mostly women and children to harvest cotton. Photo by Chuck Nacke
