Nuclear Waste Burial at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Carlsbad, New Mexico - An RH-72B shipping container at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The container is used to transport radioactive waste from America's nuclear weapons program by truck from all over the country. The waste is stored in rooms carved out of an ancient salt formation a half mile below the Chihuahuan Desert. The RH-72B container holds three 55-gallon drums of waste. It is shielded by lead and protected by large "impact limiters" at either end which would act as shock absorbers in the event of an accident.
