On the right, near the theatre, are the ruins of a large Byzantine church dedicated to S. Titus ; in front of this church are the remains of the ancient piazza, the agora of the Greeks, which has been excavated a short time since (Fig. 43). Behind the olives thedark, funereal green of the cypresses forms a strong contrast, andthese slender trees rise up against the sky like minarets beside thecupolas of a mosque. To the right of the river Lethoeus the remains of the Romantheatre, Iving in the hollow of a little valley, show as a reddishpatch among the golden heads of corn which rise from theorchestra. The breeze from the mountain ruffles the dense 94 PALACES OF CRETE AXD THEIR BUILDERS green foliage of the fig trees and diffuses the acrid smell of thejuice like incense. This theatre did not suffice for the Romans, and they builtanother on the left bank of the torrent, using the material of theancient Greek edifices. T
