The African Elephant is much larger than that of Asia;sixteen feet is not an uncommon height, and many are killedof even superior proportions. The distinction between the African and Indian elephants isclearly defined by Dr. Livingstone. The first elephant (he says)killed by my man was a male, not full grown j his height at thewithers was 8 feet 4 inches ; and the circumference of his forefoot 44 inches. The female, which was full grown, measured inheight 8 feet 8 inches, the circumference of the fore foot being 48inches. These details are given with the view of showing that thegeneral rule, that twice the circumference of the fore foot equals 33* AFRICAN IVORY. the height of the animal is not of universal application; for in thefirst instance, double the circumference falls short of the height bytwelve inches, and in the second instance by eight inches.
