The President, Mr. Henry Bessemer, in opening the proceedings,said he was pleased on that occasion to see so many of the membersaround him. This was not a meeting in which a few comparativelyidle men met together to spend a pleasant afternoon. It was ameeting for which many of the members had left important worksin various parts of the country, and he felt sure that their presencein such numbers was an excellent augury for the continued successof the Institute.

The progress that had been made since the firsttime he had the honour of addressing a meeting in that room hadbeen very considerable. The proceedings of the Institute would beso fully set forth in the report which would be laid before themeeting, that he did not wish to occupy time in enlarging uponthat point. The President then moved that Mr. W. S. Roden, , and T. Smith be appointed scrutineers
