Timoleon, a Greek general and statesman from Corinth, sets sail for Sicily, bringing help against Carthaginians and Spartans.


Timoleon (411 to 387 ) was a Greek general and statesman from Corinth. He favored the Greek cause in Sicily against the Carthaginians. In the 440s, Syracuse was being threatened not only by the Carthaginians, but by the Spartans. When the city-state of Syracuse in Sicily sent to Corinth for help, Timoleon was nominated to go. He did so with a group of Corinth's most important citizens. This early 1900s illustration shows Timoleon setting sail for Sicily. Soon after, Timoleon was the acknowledge ruler of Syracuse.
