In Gentropus ateralbus, forinstance, the first fifteen rings of the bronchi are incomplete, internally and are closed by membrane, but the membranous, area is narrow ; this area widens out at the sixteenth ring,,which with the following is much stronger than the pre-ceeding and succeeding rings of the bronchus; to the sixteenthring are attached the intrinsic muscles of the syrinx. Pyr-rhocentor and Geococcyx have a similar syrinx. The syrinx ofGuira is in many respects very remarkable. On a superficialview it is not unlike that of Guculus. The voice organ inthis genus is placed further forwards than in the genera 278 STRUCTURE AND CLASSIFICATION OF BIRDS ^ ■considered. But the first two or three rings of the bronchusare complete rings with no membrane internally. From thefourth onwards the rings are semi-rings. Upon the sixthare inserted the syringeal muscles. Coua is somewhat-inter-mediate. The first seven bronchial semi-rings have their-inner extremities separated by a narrow area of the seventh are attached the intrinsic muscles of thesyrinx.
