During this periodhe delivered and published the Lectures on Intem-perance, which became famous, and he also bore anactive part in the Unitarian controversy whichwas then rife in New England. In 1826 he wascalled to the pastorate of the newly organizedHanover Street Congregational Church in Presbyterian denomination had set up theLane Theological Seminary near Cincinnati, O.,and Dr. Beecher was invited to the presidency ofthe new institution, which he accepted in held this position for twenty years, duringten of which he was also pastor of a Presbyterian.
