Shopkeeping is a way of making money for people who want to become self-sufficient. Here, in the ground floor premises of a breeze block maisonette, we see a spaza 'corner shop' next to a hair salon, advertising its services on the wall dividing the two. Steel roller doors are security when closed. The spaza, rather than being a walk around store for everyday food items, also has the added security of a high counter. A plastic crate gives access for small children and there is a wooden bench for elderly people waiting to be served. Both premises have their own waste bins, in addition to the wheelie bins serving the maisonette residents.
