FIFTH ARMY : ANZIO BRIDGEHEADSOLDIER EX-MINER'S OPINIONS OF MINERS' STRIKE - Cpl. L. Lynan (left) of 160 Derby Road, Ripley, Derbyshire, and L/Cpl. S. Boardman of 13 Albion Street, Northgate, Wakefield. Cpl. Lynan worked for the Brittain Colliery, Ripley. He was with the in France and Dunkirk, and Tunisia and landed in Italy. His opinion was "Previous to the war the miner had not a square deal, and now he sees an opportunity of getting what he considers to be his rights. At a critical time like this, however, strikes should not be tolerated and pay increases should be negotiated through the trade union. I'd like a chance to get back to the mines, even if I had to work seven shifts a week". His friend L/Cpl. Boardman who has seen the same service with the addition of the landing in Pantellaria takes the brusque soldier's view "I don't agree with the miners coming out on strike. They should remember that there are miners in the lines whose supplies depend upon their efforts'. Photographic negative , British Army
