Plaque in remembrance of the Paisley Canal Disaster on 10 November 1810 when 85 people died

The section of canal between Paisley and Johnstone was officially opened on 6 November 1810 with the launch of the Countess of Eglinton, a canal pleasure boat. On 10 November 1810, 4 days after the official opening, disaster struck on Martinmas Fair Day holiday. As the boat arrived full of passengers at Paisley, large crowds started to embark whilst others were still trying to disembark making the boat unstable and it capsized. Some people were thrown into the cold waters whilst others were trapped inside. In all 85 men, woman and children died. This plaque is in memory of those who died in this disaster.
