On the next day, the council again met,and presented to the sultan a series of resolutedecisions, tending to bring matters to a crisis withRussia. The state of feeling in Constantinople at thattime was, indeed, one of great excitement; andthe sultan was forced onward by a pressure toostrong to be resisted. Abdul-Medjid has few ofthose characteristics which correspond with thepopular notion of a Turk : he is a quiet, some-wbat indolent, well-meaning man,
