Engraving depicting Joseph Bramah's bank note printing machine, used by the Bank of England from 1809. Up to this date the numbers were entered on notes by hand, but Bramah's machine incorporated a consecutive numbering device which enabled a single clerk to deal with 2,600 notes per day instead of 400.
