The first four years course of graded medical instruction everoffered in this country was instituted by this School in thespring of 1878. For twelve^ years it was maintained alongsidethe older three years course, and the student was given oppor-tunity to elect between the two. In the summer of 1890 thefaculty were satisfied that the time had arrived to discontinuethe shorter course and to make the longer one the requiredcourse for all students. At that time the announcement wasmade that the change Avould go into effect in the fall of 1891;but as several students immediately appeared who were anxiousto begin the new course without delay, provision was made forthem, and the required four years course was commenced inthe fall of 1890. Since that date the requirement has beenfour years of professional study before promotion to the degree
