Marie and Pierre Curie. Historical portrait of the Polish-French physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934, nee Marya Sklodowska) and her husband the French physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906). They married in 1895 and Pierre then joined his wife in working on the newly-discovered radioactive materials. In 1898 they isolated the radioactive elements polonium and radium. Marie won the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for this work. She and Pierre had been awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics (with Becquerel) for their work on radioactivity.
