Fossil crinoid or sea lily (Scyphocrinites elegans). Crinoids are marine echinoderms dating back to the Lower Ordovician period (500 million years ago). This crinoid attached itself to the sea floor with a stalk (at lower centre), and captured food with feathery arms that formed a cup. Thousands of extinct crinoid species have been found as fossils, but only a few hundred sea lily species still exist today.
