Transcription:Oct Camp Holms Oct 30th 1861 Mr. David McNair Dear Brother I now sit down to write you a few lines not for any favor I received from you but I have been on a thundring big scout and I must tell you something about it We started on saturday night about 11 Oclock and marched to Hermann Camped there all night started next day on the Rail Road about 9 Oclock run up the Mosouria River[Missouri River] to a place called Sehamois[Chamois] got off the cars got on board the steam boat crossed the River about 12 OC cooked dinner stayed there until 11 OC at night then commenced our march marched within 3 miles of Fulton the chart is on this sheet camped until morning then marched into town camped in the Court House yard stayed all night started next day at 12 marched to the river against sun down travling 15 miles in that time you had better believe it was a fast march but I twisted and wound it through the object in taking us out there was to brea[k] up a camp 1200 secessionsts but there had been a Compromise made with them by one of our officers that they would go to their homes and never rais arms against the Goverment so that stoped us from going any farther we had between 800 and 1000 men with us we also had Generel Prentis[Prentiss] and General Harding with us the boys all appeared to be very much disappointed that they did not get a fight but I must go on with my great adventure we camped on the river bank that might and waited for steem boat until 1 when the Boat came we then got on board her and started for Hermann and arived there at Title: Unsigned letter fragment of a Union soldier, Camp Holms, to David McNair, October 30, 1861 . 30 October 1861.
