This little village has a double interest to the tourist andsummer resorter. It not only has a charm peculiar to itself,but is also the gateway to Budds Lake, from which stages runover a picturesque mountain road through the forests, a dis-tance of about two and one-half miles. Stanhope is inreality a combination of two villages, for that portion lying on one side of the railroad iscalled Net-cong. Here isa pretty littlesheet of wa-ter. The lake is well stocked with fish, which also runup Musconetcong River to Lake Hopatcong, and offers con-siderable interest to the angler. Budds Lake lies a short distance from Stanhope is a charming body of water, about five miles in circum-ference, lying like a mirror among the hills which give acharm to any country, and which add so materially to theattractions of north New Jersey. They are the natural res-ervoirs of the surrounding mountains, in the very heart ofthe mineral region, and while easily accessible are far enoughaway to give the greatest possible change of air, and asmuch of the rugged wildness of nature as can be foundwithin a thousand miles.
