Saskiassimple and loving nature knew no wishes but her devoted to him, she never sought to direct hiscourse, and there was no consciousness of sacrifice in thereadiness with which she gave up all to him. Theinscription written below by Rembrandt gives us the following in-formation : This is a portrait of my wife at the age of twenty-one,drawn the third day after we were betrothed, June 8, 1633. Vosmaers rendering of the Dutchterm getroitiut by the word married raises a question as tothe authenticity of this drawing,for Rembrandt and Saskia weremarried, as we know, on June 22,1634 ; but, as Dr. Bredius pointsout, getroiizut was also used in the
