Butterflies butterfly Painted Lady Vanessa Cardui, wingspan 60mm, Likes open places. The upperwings have a salmon pink background colour with patterns of black with white spots. The underwings are marbled with buff, white and brown; the forewings are tinged with pinkish buff. European. Prefers fields and downs but sometimes garden flowers, it is a fast flier, particularly when disturbed but often returns to the original spot. Painted Ladies are continuously brooded but survive the winter only in the extreme south. The flight season lasts from April to October and individuals seen in Britain are invariably migrants. The larval foodplants include thistles and burdocks.
