Captain Nugent was the oldest of his parents four children, and inearly life the care of his mother and the younger children fell upon his youngshoulders. The educational privileges which he enjoyed were those affordedby the common schools of the county, and after putting aside his text bookshe learned the carpenters trade, at which he worked when only eleven yearsof age. He was thus engaged till 1867, when he came to the Puget Soundcountry, where he was at once made mate of the steamer Success, plying be-.
