Leo XIII, the author of the fundamental social encyclical “Rerum Novarum”. Ever since this writing, written in 1891, one can speak of a “doctrinally founded church social teaching”. Before that, Catholic social commitment was limited to the initiative of individuals. The Pope is depicted surrounded by two people who supported or encouraged him in writing this work: the social reformer Karl Freiherr von Vogelsang and the Dominican Albert Maria Weiß. They refer to this document with pen and book. On the far right of the picture is the appointment of Ignaz Seipel as Labour and Social Affairs Minister shortly before the end of the monarchy, on October 28, 1918, by Emperor Karl.
