The year 1609 is made memorable by the ap-pearance upon the shores of America of HenryHudson, an English navigator in the employ of theEast India Company, who, abandoning at sea hisplan to find a northeast passage to India, pro-posed to seek at 40 N. latitude a northwest pas-sage. Failing to find an inlet to the WesternOcean at Newfoundland, Penobscot Bay, or CapeCod, he sailed for a week in Delaware Bay andKiver, and early in September, after landing uponSandy Hook, took his yacht, Half Moon, one.
