Mr. Polk rode to the Capitol in thesame carriage with Gen. Taylor; and the same even-ing, with Mrs. Polk, he commenced his return toTennessee. He was then but fifty-four years of had ever been strictly temperate in all his habits,and his health was good. With an ample fortune,a choice library, a cultivated mind, and domestic tiesof the dearest nature, it seemed as though long yearsof tranquility and happiness were before him. But thecholera—that fearful scourge—was then sweeping upthe Valley of the Mississippi.
