No one of theactors in the drama, he said, hadstudied his part for the great play. Therewas no study, no character, no duraltleaudacity in the whole party. This ple-beian crowd of workers aspired to pos-sess the world, and yet it knew nothingof the world. When a burglar means toforce a house, he first makes a study ofthe surroundings, the doors, the locks ;he knows where the strong boxes are,and how to get into them. But theCommune was a novice at the trade of buiglary ; was reduced to slay in orderto steal; and found itself finally embar-rassed by useless crimes, not knowingwhere the treasures, the secret hoards,which it had committed crime in orderto possess, were to be found.
