Carthaginian Hannibal took poison that it was said he had kept in a vial in his ring to avoid falling into Roman hands.
The Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca (247-182 ) in the Second Punic War fought by Carthage against Rome set out from Spain and crossed the Alps with his army and elephants into Italy In 216 He won a major victory against the Romans at Cannae but never captured Rome, returned to Carthage and met defeat in 202 against the Romans at Zama. In the years that followed, he fled to several areas, finally seeking refuge with Prusias of Bithynia, who then turned on him and was to give him over to the Romans. To prevent this, Hannibal took poison (pictured here) that it was said he had kept in a vial in his ring - the date is unknown but the place was said to be Libyssa in present-day Turkey.
