A 1949 miniature metal souvenir pub sign for Whitbread's Brewery. This sign (number 36 in Series 1) featured The Woolpack, Benover, Yalding, Kent and was designed by Kathleen M Claxton. The illustration shows a jute woolsack. Early wool packs (sacks) were made from jute, prior to the use of synthetic fibres. Each woolpack contained a 'bale', a standard sized and weighted pack of wool compressed by a mechanical wool press. This 'bale of wool' became the regulated standard for selling wool.
