Temple with images of Garuda

Temple with an elaborate plinth, pillars and roof bearing images of Garuda, flanked by kalashas (water pots). The blue interior is divided into two sections. The upper probably shows the mula murti (fixed image in a temple): the blue-complexioned Vishnu lies on the coils of Shesha. The deity’s upper right hand is flexed beneath his head, his upper left hangs loose along his body, his lower right hand carries the chakra and his lower left the shankha. His feet rest on a lotus. Three goddesses, Śrī Devi, Bhu Devi and Nila Devi, are shown behind him. He wears a dhoti and an angavastra (shawl) tied around his hips. A thin stalk connects the lotus, on which the four-headed Brahmā sits, to his body. A lotus garland enhances the top of the picture. The lower part of the painting is occupied by the representation of the processional images. Here Vishnu, of a pinkish hue, sits in lalitasana on a throne flanked by two consorts. In his hands are the chakra (discus) and shankha (conch), and the lower hands are in abhaya and varada mudra. The consorts sit in European fashion with their feet down; each carries a lotus in their right or left hand. In the foreground are a number of puja implements: a tray with flowers, a chakra, a lamp, silver vessels containing the holy water, the shatari (silver crown decorated with Vishnu’s feet), a five-wicked arati lamp and a further vessel.
