Number 6695 is an 0-6-2 tank of the Great Western Railway's 56XX class. It was built by Armstrong Whitworth of Newcastle in 1928. The class were small but powerful mixed traffic locomotives. Most worked coal trains and mixed passenger services in the steep sided vallies of South Wales. 6695 started its life in the West Midlands and was transferred to South Wales just after the war. Shed plate 87A shows that it was based at Neath for a long time. It hauled the last passenger train from Neath to Treherbert in 1961. After being with drawn and sent to the scrapyard at Barry in the 1960s it was subsequently rescued and restored. It started steaming again in 2003. Seen here near the restored signal box outside Swanage railway station in Dorset, UK.
