If the demand for pig iron for consumption were nowexceptionally active, and if prices were advancing, thestocks held at ihe close of 1891 would not be is for the producers themselves to decide whether theseconditions exist. It will be remembered that at the closeof 1S90 and soon afterward many furnaces were blown outbecause of the accumulation of unsold stocks, yet they didnot then aggregate much more than the quantity withwhich we began the present year.
